From Mainland to Island -
Musical connections across the Pentland Firth
A film and piece of orchestral music created by young people who have complex needs and live in Caithness and Orkney. The music and film are created with the young people over a series of intensive visits by Hear My Music practitioners Emily Carr-Martin and Clea Friend. With the theme of ‘the place where we live’ in mind, ideas involving local folklore, history and connections to natural elements have been developed into a series of short pieces which have been scored for the Caithness Junior Orchestra by Clea Friend and Katrina Gordon and further creatively developed by the orchestra, conducted by Susie Dingle. These will be played alongside a film and sound recordings that document the process of creating this music.
This project has been made possible through the Jack Carr memorial fund. Jack was the father of Emily, the founder of Hear My Music. The fund was created for Hear My Music to deliver a project in Jack’s memory, this project was developed as a fitting tribute as he followed Hear My Music’s involvement in the St Magnus Festival 2016 avidly in his last months and loved both Thurso and Orkney. The project has been further supported by the Spirit of Caithness - Foundation Scotland Fund and Dounreay Communities fund.
