12 THE LAST POST

, Start Time: 16:15, End Time: 18:45 Ness Battery Stromness, KW16 3DL

During the latter stages of World War II, Dennis Marshall wrote a series of letters to his fiancée, tracing his journey as a Signaller in the 30 Corps of the British Army. These letters describe his experiences and offer a very personal insight into his thoughts and feelings, and a human connection to the events of the time.

Dennis’ grandson, musician Tom Poulson along with Alistair MacDonald and Susan Worsfold, explore these letters in an extraordinary new work that brings together the words from these letters with new music for trumpet and live electronics, reflecting on the times, technology and sounds of the era in an immersive performance. This work has been specially commissioned as part of the 40th anniversary premieres by St Magnus International Festival. The performance takes place in the unusual Mess Hall at Ness Battery, a military compound on the outskirts of Stromness overlooking Hoy Sound.
