THE FOOD, THE FABLE AND THE WAVES BEYOND
In celebration of the Year of Scotland's Food and Drink the Foy explores the significant food writer and folklorist Florence Marian McNeill (1885-1973) who was born and brought up in the Free Kirk manse in Holm, Orkney, where her father was minister. Floss's Foy will explore the huge legacy of heritage she captured through her work, with tastings of some of her favourite recipes from "a' the airts o'bonnie Scotland".
After graduating from Glasgow University with an arts degree, McNeill travelled abroad, visiting Greece, Egypt and Palestine, working in London as part of the
suffragette movement, and later as a freelance journalist. Excited by the modern Scottish renaissance in literature and culture, she returned to Edinburgh in 1926. A lifelong interest in traditional Scottish Cookery first found expression in The Scots Kitchen (1929), and later The Scots Cellar (1956). F. Marian McNeill's greatest
contribution to the study of Scottish folk life was published in four volumes as The Silver Bough (1957-68), a calendar of the seasons, from Candlemas to Yule.
