SCHUMANN Piano Quintet Op. 44

Across the chamber music in the 2015 Festival we have a number of significant works in the repertoire and Schumann’s Piano Quintet is no exception. Dedicated to Clara, his wife, it is one of his finest works and one of the greatest works for this combination firming the ensemble of string quartet with piano as one of the Romantic period’s favourite combinations. A highly lyrical and romantic work this piece had another composer at its birth as Mendelssohn was the pianist. Written only forty years before, Beethoven’s quartet is a powerful and dramatic work with all the storm and rapture of his most mature music.
