31 Rognvald Re-Imagined

, Start Time: 11:00 Salvation Army Church Junction Road, Kirkwall KW15 1AX

IAN CROCKATT Poet

Poet and translator Ian Crockatt here reads from his new translations as well as talking about the Viking verses of Rognvald, Earl of Orkney, recorded in the Orkneyinga Saga. Full of highly stylised, often grotesque images, Ian Crockatt’s masterly translations convey the skill, vigour and daring of the original. Skaldic poetry is one of the most elaborate and original in European literature where rich narratives and old Norse mythology blend with familiar place-names and landscapes to create a peculiarly alluring, sometimes comic, world that never quite settles. A truly enlightening hour which opens the window on an important era and significant figure from Orkney's history.
