The virtuosic wind players of the SCO bring us a vivid selection of music which includes music originally for the Octet combination - two each of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns - and music which is arranged or re-imagined.

BEETHOVEN Octet Op. 103
Mozart appears in two operatic guises: first the arrangement by Wendt of his Turkish tale in the harem, and then in the work based on ideas from The Marriage of Figaro by Jonathan Dove. Beethoven's early work is a dazzling display and exploits the unusual colours of this ensemble as well as the virtuosity of each of the instruments. Written for the Elector Maximillian Franz, for whom Beethoven was a court composer in Bonn, the work shows the calibre of musicians, particularly the horns, for whom Beethoven was able to write.
