The stunning, natural vocal sound of the ensemble A Filetta in combination with the late-night atmosphere of St Magnus Cathedral promises to be one of the highlights of this year's Festival. Renowned across the world, this Corsican singing group was formed in 1978 in part to preserve the ancient song traditions of the island as well as to develop new vocal compositions and over the years the group, whose name refers to a fern that grows on Corsica, has built an enviable reputation. The group is characterised by an inventiveness that is continually renewed by many collaborations involving theatre, film and contemporary dance. The intense and earthy vocal sound is entirely unaccompanied and is both ancient and modern in its soundworld with profoundly spiritual overtones and deeply moving humanity.
