12 Robin Michael & Savitri Grier

, Start Time: 22:00, End Time: 23:10 St Magnus Cathedral Broad Street, Kirkwall KW15 1NX

St Magnus Cathedral has one of the most beautiful acoustics for music and is especially resonant for solo instruments.  In this concert we hear two classics of the solo repertoire by Bach alongside more recent music.  George Benjamin’s miniatures were all written for friends and contain a lullaby, canon and lied and their intimacy contrasts with the large scale sonata by Kodály which was written in 1915 and is a powerful work filled with soulful melody and folk rhythm.

Robin Michael  cello
Savitri Grier  violin

Bach   Partita No. 3 in E for solo violin, BWV. 1006
George Benjamin   Three Miniatures for solo violin (2001)
Bach  Suite No.1 in G major BWV 1006
Kodály   Sonata for Solo cello op.8

Robin Michael is one of Scotland’s most renowned cellists and has a busy career as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader.  Savitri Grier has been acclaimed as one of the UK’s newest violin talents and is as at home in chamber music as she is as concert soloist.
