THE MARIAN CONSORT - marianconsort.co.uk

The Marian Consort performs music from the 'Siglo de Oro' or Golden Age, an era of intense productivity and stellar compositional achievement in the Cathedrals and Royal Chapels of late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Hapsburg Spain.

JUAN NAVARRO Regina caeli laetare
CECILIA McDOWALL Alma redemptoris mater
FRANCISCO GUERRERO Ave virgo sanctissima
ALONSO LOBO Ave Regina caelorum
ANDREZJ PANUFNIK Song of the Virgin Mary
CRISTOBAL DE MORALES Exaltata est, sancta Dei genitrix
HOWARD SKEMPTON Ave virgo sanctissima
RODRIGO CEBALLOS Hortus conclusus
MICHAEL BERKELEY Ego dilecto meo
RODRIGO CEBALLOS O Virgo benedicta
JUDITH WEIR Ave Regina caelorum
FRANCISCO GUERRERO Agnus Dei from Missa Sancta et Immaculata

These magnificent works, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, are the result of competition and emulation amongst the most eminent Spanish composers of the time. Juxtaposed with these are settings of Marian texts by modern British composers: these contemporary works, which reflect the sensibilities of their sixteenth-century counterparts, continue and re-imagine the tradition of musical emulation and imitation much admired and practised by the likes of Ceballos, Morales, Lobo and Guerrero, whose setting of Ave virgo sanctissima earned him the soubriquet 'el cantor de Maria' and a reputation which spanned both continents and centuries.
