, Start Time: 14:15 Balfour Castle Balfour, Shapinsay KW17 2DY

The world-renowned Lithuanian quartet bring music from their homeland alongside Schubert in the Drawing Room of Balfour Castle.

GIEDRIUS KUPREVIČIUS Six Lithuanian Folk Songs
SCHUBERT Quartet No.14, D.810 (Death and the Maiden)

Balfour Castle

The quartet takes its name from Čiurlionis, one of the significant figures in the arts in 19th century Lithuania both as composer and widely exhibited painter. Here they perform his only string quartet which reflects the period in which it was written with a graceful romanticism. Kupevi ius is a contemporary composer whose music is highly inventive and here investigates the folk music of Lithuania. Schubert's masterpiece quartet takes as its starting point the Lied of the same name and paints a highly dramatic, intense and romantic picture of desolation and loss. The young star Lithuanian-born chef Martyn Meid, whose London restaurant INK has won him acclaim, will create a range of canapés for you to enjoy with a glass of Prosecco after the concert.
