The Kapten Trio cross the centuries in their first concert at the Festival beginning with Beethoven’s well-known trio written just after he completed his Pastoral symphony. Its eerie slow movement gives rise to the added title “ghost”.   Debussy’s Trio is the work of the eighteen year-old composer and yet shows a very mature creativity whilst Arensky’s Trio is a passionate and virtuosic work fully in the heights of the Romantic tradition.  The contemporary Estonian composer, Helena Tulve, wrote Lumineux/Opaque in 2004 and it is very much an exploration of sound and texture including the use of three wine glasses to provide some of the music.
